چگونه ترکی استانبولی یاد گرفتی؟

I never ever wanted to learn Turkish, I mean, I wanted to learn many languages in my life, but Turkish was not one of the languages in my list.

But as a teenager, from the age of 18 until 21 I watched Turkish series like crazy. After a while, I noticed I’m acquiring a lot! And as a person who loves languages, I said that I should take advantage of that, I shouldn’t let this chance just go away. And I remembered this girl I used to go to highschool with who used to speak Turkish amazingly because she watches Turkish series. So I said hey, I will take advantage of this.

2-Self-teaching the Basics:

Ok, so I was in a vacation in the US. I was in the library, and then suddenly, I remembered my decision of taking advantage of me acquiring a lot of Turkish bla bla.. so I went to the languages section, and I found this book:

I saw, wow, they teach it in the universities!! So I took it. When I went back home. I taught myself the basics through this book, it’s amazing, and it had exercises and I used to do them all then check if my answers were right. (The book sometimes uses old words, like for example they would use otomobil instead of araç or araba for car, but overall, regarding the basics, it’s amazing! It’s just like what I want, straight to the point, not much talking, not much explaining, the lessons are short and straightforward, and it focused on making correct sentences, mostly grammar, and this was what I wanted). I finished the book, but I took my time, and the rest I picked up from watching series, the book clarified many things to me, like why do we use this grammatical aspect here but not there bla bla, some things that I used to wonder about but problem was mostly solved by the book.

3-Surprise

The surprise was when I went to Turkey, I found myself speaking Turkish, I was honestly surprised by my ability lol, and everyone who knew I wasn’t Turk would get surprised, my family was surprised 😮, everyone, was surprised. I mean I remember my aunt’s driver during the trip asking me to lie to people and tell them that I went to a school to learn Turkish so that I don’t get “nazar” or “evil eye” maybe in English? Lol.
